Save Your Natural Gas $$

Purchased this unit at Costco for $54.99 5 days ago. The target room for the unit is 18X15. Using the unit on the low setting with the thermostat turned all the way to the right, it took 30 or so minutes to change the room temperature by 5 degrees. Impressive!

Pros: Extremely quiet, slim design, ceramic=safer than oil filled, designed for long-term use, tip over heater turns off, lightweight and portable.

Cons: No dial to choose temperature in degrees, no timer.

I highly recommend it for spot heating when you don’t want to over use your furnace when you only use a smaller area of the house.

Update (2/8/2012): This item is currently on sale here for the lowest price I’ve seen.

Nice when it worked but now a fire hazard.
the bionaire was working nicely for two winters - nice radiant heat coming from the face and stored flat out of the way in ous small home. Last winter I started noticing a buzzing or sort of whistling sound coming from what I believe to be the thermal switch. It would only make this sound for a few seconds when the heater would automatically turn back on; the heater cycling on. I figured the switch was hanging up a bit when cycling on. I was weary so we only used it when we could supervise it (not recommended ’cause you always walk away). This late winter or early spring I had it on and it started smoking from the switch side/area. If i did not see it and immediately shut it off and unplug it - then it probably would have burst in to flames like the one in the you tube video. Needs better quality components obviously! I’m probably going to remove the thermal switch and replace it or just use it as an on/off heater only meaning no auto temp control. I’m going to contact bionaire.

Quiet, safe, & heats well
I had this unit for a week now and am about to buy another, because it works so for my purposes. I have a child who likes to put his hands on everything and a baby who wakes up in the high background noise, so that any heater I buy must be safe and quiet. Security - The water heater is warm but not hot to the touch. So if my child falls into it or puts his hand on it, it will not burn you. - The slim design allows me to place it against a wall, so it is less likely to tip over. - There is an automatic shut off if the heater tips over. Quiet - The heater makes a click sound even when activation or deactivation, but there is no noise when the heater warms. - My baby is not woken by the heater. Function Heating - Works very well for my medium sized heating chamber, which is approximately 15 ft x 20 ft with 8 ft ceilings. - The thermostat keeps the temperature stable. Cons - If the heating is turned off for a few days, it emits a smell like plastic when it is turned on. The smell lasts for 15 minutes then.
